Gum diseases affect the tissues surrounding the teeth; if not treated, tooth loss is inevitable. The major reason is the plaque covering the tooth. If plaque is not removed regularly, gums get infected and a red, puffy, irritated appearance occurs. This phase is called gingivitis.
When gingivitis is not treated, infection spreads through the inner tissues such as root and bone; as a result gum recession and tooth mobility occurs. This phase is called periodontitis.
At earlier phases, gum diseases can be treated simply by cleaning and polishing tooth surfaces. As the disease progresses, more complicated treatments such as gum operations are needed.
Periodical cleanings at 3 to 6 months intervals prevent gum diseases and help to control the present status.
