Orthodontics is diagnosis, preventation and treatment of dental irregularities. Dentofacial orthopedics is diagnosis, preventation and treatment of jaw irregularities. Removable and fixed appliances are used according to the case.
Orthodontic treatment can be applied to adults as well as children. Problems such as dental irregularities, crooked teeth, crowded teeth, gap between teeth are treated with braces. Simpler irregularities are easilly corrected by thin, transparent mouth pieces. Treatment concerning one or two teeth can be finished within 3-4 months; if more teeth are involved, it takes 18-24 months.
Facial irregularities such as upper or lower jaw located in front or back of normal position according to head can be treated with face bows or masks in childhood. These treatments take a few years. For adults plastic and reconstrutive surgery is also essential. After surgery, 1-3 weeks period is needed for healing. |
