Preventative dentistry begins with the first tooth and continues life long. It is a control / treatment concept.
Preventative Dentistry in Childhood:
Preventative dentistry for children includes;
* Brushing
* Dental development
* Flossing
* Flourides
* Control of bad oral habits (thumb sucking etc.)
* Orthodontics
* Proper diet
* Sealants
* Sports safety
* Parent involvement
Preventative dentistry means a healthy smile. Children with healthy teeth chew more easily and gain more nutrients from the food they eat. They have a better chance of general health. A bright smile is more attractive, giving children confidence in their appearance.
A special program of flossing, brushing, good eating habits and periodic dental visits will help the child to have a lifetime of healthy habits.
Preventative Dentistry in Older Adulthood:
Usually patients over 60 are not well informed about the importance of preventative dentistry in older ages.
Periodic cleaning is very important in senior years for people with teeth. This process helps to prevent tooth decay and gum disease and also improves the quality of taste. Flouride application is also important to maintain good oral health.
Intraoral cancer screening is another major subject. In case of red , bleeding areas , pain, temperature sensitivities which begin and last for two weeks, then a dental check-up must be done. A cancer lesion can appear in a toothless mouth.
The dentures used must also be cleaned and polished by dentist at constant periods. |
